What is a

Paralegal

Ontarians have a choice when it comes to legal services — paralegals and lawyers can help you solve your legal problems and protect your rights.

Paralegals are an integral part of the legal system. They are professionally educated and insured and are licensed by the Law Society of Ontario to serve the public and provide access to justice.

Paralegals can provide an affordable option for those in need of legal services or representation. This helps to reduce self-represented litigants in court cases and deters people from seeking advice from non-regulated legal resources or individuals who may lead them astray.

Paralegals often have many years of experience in-court and at tribunals. They are licensed to independently represent people in small claims court, traffic court, some criminal matters and before tribunals

OUR TEAM

CHARITY DELA CRUZ – TOUPIN

Charity is a licensed paralegal in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario. She graduated with honours from CTS Canadian Career College in September 2022. In April 2023, Charity successfully passed the Law Society of Ontario’s paralegal licensing examination, earning her P1 Paralegal licence. In January 2024, Charity founded Dela Cruz Legal Services.

Charity’s journey is marked by resilience and adaptation to life’s challenges. Despite facing adversity with her battle against cancer during her university years, she didn’t let it deter her completely from her educational aspirations. She initially pursued a Bachelor’s degree in Science with a Major in Biology at the University of the Philippines, showing her commitment to academic pursuits. However, her experience with cancer led her to reevaluate her career goals, ultimately deciding to shift her focus away from becoming a doctor.

Instead, Charity transitioned to legal studies, enrolling in Bachelor of Laws at the University of the Cordilleras. However, her journey took another turn when she migrated to Canada through the Live-in Caregiver program in 2006. This move reflects her adaptability and willingness to explore new opportunities for herself and her family.

In Canada, Charity found employment as a Martial Arts instructor and Office manager at her husband’s Karate School in Aurora, showcasing her diverse skill set and ability to excel in various roles. This period of stability and contribution to her husband’s business also provided her with the opportunity to nurture her family life, residing in Newmarket with her husband and two children.

Charity’s resilience and determination are further highlighted by her decision to return to school during the Covid-19 lockdown to pursue legal studies once again. This demonstrates her ongoing commitment to personal and professional growth, despite the challenges posed by the global pandemic.

Overall, Charity’s journey exemplifies adaptability, perseverance, and a steadfast commitment to her goals and responsibilities, both in her career and personal life.

not to boast but

Charity’s experience training under a highly skilled female paralegals in Barrie. During her training the very first case she worked on made it to CanLII, which is remarkable. This suggests Charity had exposure to complex legal matters early in her career and demonstrates her capability as a paralegal. Successfully handling a WSIAT case and having it documented on CanLII is a significant achievement, as these cases often involve intricate legal nuances related to workplace safety and insurance. Charity’s involvement in such a case speaks to her competence and potential as a professional in the field of paralegal work.
